I was travelling through South America in 2023-2024 and joined this project to volunteer in their workshops. During my stay, I became part of the daily life on the property and could:

• explore the material guadua (a bamboo species) and how to process it
• experience community living in the colombian country side
• exchange on culture and knowledge with people from Costa Rica, France, Colombia, Spain and Germany

What I enjoyed most about this experience is:

• Living with people who care about each other and the environment in which they live
• Working with a natural material close to its local source
• Combining individual strenghts to achieve something bigger
• and pizza night

I joined the open source product development (OSPD) project "LibreWater" during my master's thesis. Together, with many contributions, we pushed forward the prototype from a 10x10 cm box towards a prototype for laboratory tests. ‌
‌The thing about open source design is that it is never finished. It is evolutionary, constantly changing and improving. We are continously working with supporters to improve performance, materials and usability.

Research

Over the past 60 years, countless scientists and a few entrepreneurs have worked on Solar-Powered Multiple-Effect-Distillation. How it works

Inspired by nature, the technology is as simple as rain in a box.

Water is evaporated to clean steam and condensed again on an array of metal plates: Creating highly pure water from almost any water source without the need for special filters. The heat from the condensation process is recovered.

Prototyping in Makerspaces

The great thing about decentralized product development is that work can be done in many places at the same time and only the data is exchanged. #DistributedDesign
I enjoy working on a project in a local makerspace. It creates proximity and sparks the interest of civil society. At the same time, openness enables early contact with potential end users and knowledge exchange.

Co-Creation

OSPD is powered by communities sharing the same values and interests in a product or topic.

LibreWater tackles water scarcity and promotes equitable access to water, creating a purposeful and shared mission for individuals to join forces with like-minded change-makers.

Whats next?

Goals

• Complete monitoring: Collect data on water quality and performance, using the prototype as a permanent test base.
• Solar heating: Implementation of a parabolic mirror (or similar) to concentrate the sun's energy onto the metal plates.

• R&D biomaterials: Testing of materials with a lower environmental impact and the possibility of local sourcing and processing, such as naturally occurring or waste materials.

• From the lab to the field: Identifying relevant stakeholders, like makerspaces, in areas of water scarcity. Jointly adapting the open design to local conditions.

LibreWater is an Open Source Hardware Project dedicated to turning seawater and almost any water to clean drinking water using solar energy.
On a pragmatic level and with a proven technology for solar desalination, we are exploring the bigger question: “How can we design and provide holistic solutions for humanity with Open Source Hardware and Makerspaces?”

#Assembly and Co-Design Session

In this session, we assembled a simple prototype, while questioning, bouncing inspirations, sketching, dreaming up wild ideas, co-creating on every step.
Why is this built that way? What if we changed this for that? How about we try this?

Within the core team, we are asking ourselves how we can document the creative processes involved in open source hardware development, in order to make design more accessible and ultimately streamline community contributions.

"We have found a natural source of clay."
The perfect opportunity to get to grips with the material and its processing!
In a short project lasting 2-3 days, I collected clay and potted a small espresso cup.

Colombia

First I removed coarse particles and impurities and mixed the clay with water. After a day of soaking, it was ready for further processing.
I added some sieved ash to the natural clay so that the piece didn't have to be fired at extremely high temperatures (our pizza oven served as the kiln, the temperature of which I couldn't estimate exactly).

The cup design incorporates greater thicknesses of material to achieve sufficient stability, and the handle on this small cup forms a thumb recess to keep it compact.

In dieser Arbeit wird die Produktwelt des Badmintonsports  analysiert. Basierend auf der Auswertung einer Umfrage wird eine Auswahl getroffen und die Produktentwicklung initiiert. Sportler, Werkzeug und deren wechselwirkender Einfluss stehen im Zentrum der Gestaltung.

Ein Fahrradanhänger für Sportbegeisterte, die gern einmal die 200Km-Marke knacken.
Mit einem 250W Elektro-Radnabenmotor und zwei 50Ah Akkus ausgestattet, kompensiert der Anhänger sein Eigengewicht, unterstützt bis 25 kmh und bremst intelligent dank Zug-Druck-Sensor.
Ein einzelnes 28 Zoll Rad sorgt für wenig Reibung und der Schwerpunkt liegt zentral und tief, um ein angenehmes Fahrverhalten zu erzeugen. Die Formschräge des Gehäuses von 30° und die Mantelhöhe des Reifen bieten genug Freiraum zum Boden in Kurvenlage.
Stauraum bieten beidseitig Boxen, die in zwei Fächer unterteilt sind. Ein schmaleres für Equipment, welches dauerhaft im Anhänger gelagert werden kann, wie Reparatur- und Erste-Hilfe-Kit. Und dem Äußeren kann eine Netz-Tragetasche entnommen werden, welche man vor Reiseantritt mit den nötigsten Kleidungsstücken und Snacks befüllt.

Der Straßenverkehrsordnung entsprechend, besitzt der Anhänger einen schmalen LED-Streifen als Beleuchtung, welcher nach vorn hin weiß und nach hinten rot strahlt.
Die Hard-Cover-Deckel lassen sich per Reisverschluss öffnen, was Produktions- und Montagekosten spart und semantische Bezüge zu Koffer und Taschen zieht.
Das Gehäuse besteht aus Glasfaserkunststoff und die Deichsel aus Stahlprofilen.

Ergonomie

Die Wandinstallation spart Platz auf der Arbeitsfläche. Das geschwungene Gehäuse enthält alle technischen Komponenten.
Sie hat die Anmutung eines Regals und gliedert sich optisch ins Küchenbild ein.
Das Ganze wird von einem Blech umrahmt, welches die Stellfläche für eine Tasse formt.
Wenn sie gespült ist, findet deine Lieblingstasse einen eigenen Platz auf der Maschine.
Kaffee kann dank integrierter Mühle in zwei Graden frisch gemahlen werden.
Jetzt steht nur noch die Frage, ob einfacher oder doppelter Espresso?!

Aus Leidenschaft entstand die spontane Idee, eigene Balance Boards für unsere Urlaube und das Surftraining zu fertigen.
Mit einem guten Freund zusammen gründete ich 2016 eine GbR und wir fingen an günstiges Holz aufzutreiben, einfache Boards zu shapen, und mit dem Material der Rollen zu experimentieren.
Anfang 2018 übertrug ich meine Position im Freundeskreis, um die Produktion in Köln voranzutreiben. Ich helfe ihnen mit gestalterischen Aufträgen und überarbeitete neben den Shapes der Boards das Logo unter zwei verschiedenen Anforderungen neu.

Logoüberarbeitung _1

Die Zielstellung der ersten Überarbeitung war ein Logo zu entwerfen, welches zentriert auf den Boards aufgebracht werden kann und drehsymetrisch ist. Aus der Analyse bekannter Marken der Surf- und Skate-Szene gingen drei Muster hervor. Letztendlich wurde es eine Abwandlung der mittleren Form, um Text und Bild wie Basyboard und Rolle wirken zu lassen.

Logoüberarbeitung _2

Die zweite Überarbeitung sollte ein Logo ergeben, welches klein in die Ecke der Bretter, per Brandstempel aufgebracht werden kann.
Mit einfachen Flächen nimmt das neue Logo Bezug zu Billabong und Co. Die drei angeschnittenen Bretter, mit denen alles begann, bilden mit der Schriftart „Roboto Bold“ das Signe ab 2018.

Mit geringen Werkzeugkosten und einfacher Fertigung soll ein möglichst viel einsetzbares Produkt für die breite Masse geschaffen werden.
Das Verfahren, welches mir ermöglicht in Kleinserie zu produzieren, ist der Betonguss. Mit einem Vormodell aus dem 3D-Drucker erzeugte ich einen Abguss mit Silikon. Die entstandene Form ist zahlreich wiederverwendbar, bevor sie irgendwann beim Entformen einreißen wird.
Gustav ist ein Betongussteil, welches modular zu verschiedensten Inneneinrichtungsgegenständen erweitert werden soll.

Inspiration für dieses Projekt zog ich aus der Studienzeit in China, wo es durchweg warm war und die studentische Wohnsituation sehr eingeschränkt ist. Ich würde mir ein freieres, grüneres Zusammenleben wünschen.
Aus meinem Pattern entsteht ein 20qm² Studentenwohnraum, welcher im Baukastenprinzip leicht vertrieben, geliefert und aufgebaut werden kann.
Die geometrische Form ermöglicht simple Einzelbauteile sowie modulares Erweitern zu Wohnkomplexen. Die Wohnungen besitzen keine Toiletten oder Duschen, dafür werden zentral Einheiten im gleichen Prinzip stehen, die als Gemeinschaftsküchen und -bäder eingerichtet werden.
